AMC Pacer Limited V8 in the test: Run AMC – traveling in a bell jar

The AMC Pacer should pave the way to the future. That does not quite work out. What remained was a unique design icon, the nicknames like cheese bell or puffer fish had to endure. The rehabilitation of the AMC Pacer came through appearances in cult films like Wayne's World.

Three body shapes loomed in the late seventies as the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains from the gray clouds masses of US cars out: Chevrolet Corvette, Jeep CJ7 and AMC Pacer. All three have already seen today due to their unique silhouettes from far away. The least known of the three is the AMC Pacer, which we present here.

Raging fun car from Wayne's World

The AMC Pacer has a short bonnet, low waistline and a generously glazed, rotund vehicle rear end, which is reminiscent of a cheese cover. That made the compact two-door AMC immortal and the like shown movie car. Memorable, such as the four friends from "Wayne's World" in a '77 AMC Pacer, the "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen perform (see and hear on You Tube).

And it goes even further with the optical characteristics of the AMC Pacer: The giant doors from which the Pacer is the main thing, are of different lengths. Thus, two passengers can easily sit on the narrow, placed between the wheel arches back seat, the passenger door is again around 10 centimeters longer than the already generously sized driver's door. In the gigantic external width of 1.95 meters there is a risk in narrow parking spaces that the thick AMC Pacer is the glass prison. Finally, the two act under two bulges out looking headlights - especially in the earlier models without raised hood - like the look of a cow when it thunders.

It was all pure intention. AMC President Robert Evans said the early seventies, in the face of overwhelming competition from Chrysler, Ford and General Motors: "We can not just be another pretty face on the road, we have to be very different." According to this specification, the American Motors Corporation, which emerged from the merger of Hudson and Nash in 1954 specialized on small and SUVs. Roader came only in 1970 with the acquisition of Jeep in the group; however, the often bizarre shaped road cars were homemade.

The compact Gremlin 1970 looked like an image edited with the log splitter Family coupe whose roof was half together with the rear simply chopped off. The rear window of the Long Schnauzers served as glass opening for the luggage compartment. Nevertheless, the Gremlin was a hit, selling 700,000 copies.

Original plan: a rotary engine for the AMC Pacer

The then popular US brand was in 1974 even afford a double film appearance in the James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun": Roger Moore drives a red AMC Hornet X legendary wooden bridges Spiral Stunt while villain Christopher Lee with a transformed Matador Coupe rises into the air. AMC sat down with it a monument, but in 1975 presented AMC Pacer exceeded its distinctive appearance, the show acts of the two movie cars by at least three passenger door lengths.

Front-wheel drive and a rotary engine was originally designed for the AMC Pacer, the AMC engineers wanted to buy from General Motors. thus, we were promised a low vehicle weight and a spacious interior. But GM stopped in 1974 due to poor Ro-80 experience in Europe, the Wankel development for the Pacer. AMC therefore had to rely on the house, heavy and ponderous six-cylinder, which were used among others in the Jeep Wagoneer and from 3.8 liters produced just 90 hp in the AMC Pacer.

The AMC technicians enlarged subsequently support the 'a compact rotary engine engine compartment of the Pacer by shifting the bulkhead at the expense of the interior to the rear. Therefore now the gear sits in the AMC Pacer below the instrument panel and prevents reasonably comfortable, very popular in the US ride a third front passenger.

It's not a trick, it's a Pacer - advertising slogan for the quirky car

The dark brown AMC Pacer Axel Grothausmann as sporty and luxurious top version with a V8 engine has a placed on the center console automatic selector lever with a spherical knob, which suggests a manual transmission. Two comfortable, single seats leather and an elegant & snug leather steering wheel with three perforated metal spokes make great desire for a test drive. The tastefully coordinated beige and light brown tones of the interior of the AMC Pacer including holzgemaserten instrument panel and the thick carpets create a rural-sophisticated atmosphere.

After the swing shut the heavy, decorated richly with switches, chrome trim and even carpet AMC Pacer door the impression of sitting in a fancy Oldsmobile Delta 88 or Plymouth Fury created - both at least five and a half feet long. In reality, we are sitting in a mere 4.4 meters long

In reality, we are sitting in a mere 4.4 meters long AMC Pacer, the length of which corresponds exactly to the current Opel Astra: It's not a trick, it's a Pacer (a modification of the Sony slogans).

Unfavorable space utilization

Well, a little bit but have tricked the AMC developer; the feel, especially those who sit in the AMC Pacer back. There they move on the narrow bank already for two fairly closely, what else was going through in clear starry nights behind far-reaching into the roof windows as romantic, but otherwise simply perceived as a lack of space.

The AMC Pacer seat width on the placed between the wheel arches back seat is barely 120 centimeters - a high tribute to the short wheelbase of the AMC Pacer overwhelmed by the rear-seat passengers. Also, the flat trunk offers little space. Together with the ancient and thirsty engines (see "The old test", previous page) lost the AMC Pacer quickly his first big popularity. Sales slipped from 117,224 units in 1976 to 10,215 in 1979. A year later it was over.

The US car acts like an aquarium

However, the front seat end enjoyed in the AMC Pacer the amenities of a full-blown US sedan from the late seventies: the softly hissing, attentive to the gas hanging five-liter engine; the light steering, pretty entschleunigend acting and good ride comfort. However, the occupants of the AMC Pacer effect on the environment as exotics in an aquarium, particularly in the back seat. Sitting there nice female staff, you should turn on the interior lights at night so that others have something like this.

However, AMC Pacer owners Grothausmann goes rather with his family through the area with his wife Sybille and daughter Ann Charlotte. Actually belongs to the AMC Pacer Sybille - how it came about is a terrific story: One day she saw in Munich harbors the vintage of their lives - "almost entirely of glass, a completely crazy style." The manufacturer and the model could not identify at the parked AMC Pacer, which is why old car catalogs and Auto Motor und Sport-Books should provide information on the identity. Vain.

Her Mann Axel, an experienced classic car connoisseur and - screwdrivers, so tapped together with friends on a Volvo P1800 ES "Snow Witch coffin", the wife Sybille could accept halfway.

Perfect birthday gift - wrapped with a red ribbon

But then she saw by chance in cinema remake of "Starsky & Hutch "as the two heroes were fired from a red AMC Pacer from." He is "called Sybille," the 'I then saw in Stuttgart have. "Then Axel went in search of the dream car of his wife and bought 2005 first a barely mobile AMC Pacer rust bucket in white that it was not worth to be addressed. So the issue of "Pacer" for wife Sybille was temporarily terminated.

But Axel did not let up. A new, well-maintained luxury AMC Pacer from first owner - our photo model - imported the husband from Toulouse to Ulm. Secretly "on business" so Sybille it knew nothing. Then they finally got their dream car, the AMC Pacer - wrapped with a red bow as a birthday present.
